Holding doors, not swearing...What are good manners? Holding doors, not swearing, using the correct knife, not breaking wind? One could go on. When we read a period book or see a film set in Georgian or Victorian times we may think how polite the people were. But, even in those polite times "good manners" could be used in irony to put someone down, as it can today if one can find the right words. Then we have the North, South divide. It is often said that northerners are more polite. I'm not so sure: Northerners may more freely welcome strangers, but is that a matter of good manners.
