Writing and Running for ME/CFS #2

Returning from Friday's running session.
This week’s update on progress.

The running continues to the training programme. This week I did a 20 minute brisk walk on Tuesday. A running session on Friday, consisted of running for 4 minutes and walking for 2 minute, repeated 3 times, so a total of 12 minutes running. And today I took a 3 mile walk over 50 minutes with my wife, in place of the required ‘30 minute easy walk’. The training plan I’m following is intended to prepare someone who isn’t very fit for a twenty minute running session at the end of 8 weeks. I’ve just completed the first 4 weeks, and I’m managing to keep to the programme, or to exceed it, so all going well so far.

The writing of the ME/CFS book hasn’t gone far yet  - I’ve been working on some appendices to go into the back of book 3 of the epic fantasy trilogy. My publisher wants to publish Convergence: A Seared Sky in time for Xmas, so I need to ensure it’s absolutely ready for him. And I decided I would include all the myths and legends that form the basis for the actual story as appendices in the final volume. It’s one of those jobs that you feel should be straightforward, until you start on it. Then you discover there are more than you remembered, names have changed during the writing, and some changes to format need doing. But it’s all great for me, as I enjoy the writing.

However, on the ME/CFS book front, I’ve resurrected the files of the diaries I kept during the period of illness. They’re a bit patchy, but they contain details I’d forgotten, so will be a useful resource when I start the actual writing.

#BookADayUK; A Reader Event For October. Day 2

Today's 'event' is to name your favourite fictional dog. I can't recall a fictional dog in any recent
reading, to be honest. So, for this particular 'event' I'll have to nominate my own fictional pooch: Shaulah, who appears in my fantasy trilogy, A Seared Sky, in all 3 books, Joinings, Parting, and  the yet to be published, Convergence. She's a working dog, acting as Okkyntalah's aid as he goes about hunting for food.

If you'd like to get involved, please visit Books Are My Bag by clicking this link.

And don't forget to use the hashtag, #bookadayuk when you tweet.

Here it is: the Second Book of the Trilogy!

Epic Fantasy is a genre noted for its love of long works. A Seared Sky is no exception to this rule, though it may deal with themes and ideas not generally encountered in the field. Joinings, book 1, was launched by my publisher, Fantastic Books Publishing, with a Facebook Party on 30 March 2014. Partings, book 2, will be launched at the fabulous convention, FantastiCon, in Hull on 16 August. I’ll be in attendance, with many other writers of fantasy and science fiction, to sign books, talk about my work, and answer questions. To be honest, I hope to enjoy the rest of the many delights available on the day as well! If you follow down to the previous posts, you’ll find full details of what's going on.

In the meantime, I’d better let you have some idea of what Partings is about:

A Seared Sky is a trilogy, and none of its parts is intended to be read in isolation, or out of order. Book 2, Partings, assumes readers have read book 1, Joinings. The question remains, however, how to explain events in book 2 without introducing spoilers for those who haven’t yet read book 1?
I’ll do my best:

Aklon-Dji, convinced the time is ripe for his planned uprising on the island, sets in motion a series of events leading to civil strife and a dangerous confrontation with an army that vastly outnumbers his own forces. Will his concern for justice and his apparent willingness to trust people cause his capture?

Dagla Kaz renews the pilgrimage, in spite of indications he may be mistaken. Unexpected events expose the fate of his daughter, Jodisa-Li, and a violent meeting threatens his life. Encountering different interpretations of history, which raise serious doubts, he nevertheless pursues the Skyfire toward the homeland, only to see his Virgin Gifts captured by a tribe of wild men in the wilderness. Will he recover them intact so that his mission can continue?

Tumalind’s fortunes suffer as she attempts to escape unwanted attention. Treachery follows her, placing her in serious danger from external forces over which she has no control. Will her courage and resourcefulness guide her and allow her to remain steadfast in her loyalty to Okkyntalah?

Okkyntalah, beset by assassins, is forced into a foreign war. Wounded, he seeks the help of brave and talented women to counter fatal threats. In pursuit of his dreams, he faces great danger, hardship, imprisonment and forced separation from his love. Will his courage and tenacity rescue Tumalind from the dangers she faces?

New characters join the cast as the pilgrims continue their quest over foreign lands and the journeys of the various groups travel to unexpected destinations. And, throughout all, the wise woman employs her extraordinary powers to keep track, observe, and influence wherever she is able. But will her gifts be enough to stem the rising tide of evil?

So, if you can, come along to the event. If you can't make it, there'll be links here on the blog so you can get hold of a copy the day after the launch. Enjoy the read: I certainly enjoyed the writing!

Joinings: A Seared Sky; All You Need Know.

It occurred to me yesterday, whilst writing a guest post for another blog, that I hadn’t actually placed a piece on here to describe my latest release. I’ve done lots of posts regarding character and place, lots of mentions running up to the launch in March, but I haven’t actually described the book!
Most remiss of me.

So, to coincide with its availability in the publisher’s new online store, here’s the basic information.

Joinings, the first book of epic fantasy trilogy, A Seared Sky, is published in digital and print formats by Fantastic Books Publishing and was released on 30 March 2014.

This is what the book is about:

In one sentence:
An ill-timed omen sends a malicious leader on a hazardous quest that will alter everyone it touches.

With a little more detail:
When celestial portent, the Skyfire, arrives earlier than expected, the autocratic and corrupt High Priest, Dagla Kaz, must set out for the ancient homeland to harvest a new Godwood and exchange Virgin Gifts. He must lead his reluctant pilgrims hundreds of leagues across pirate-infested seas and over hostile lands, to return triumphant before the seared sky dies back to normality.

In his father’s absence, the Renegade, Aklon, risks torture and death to bring justice to his subjugated people. Mindtalk with a wise woman on the distant mainland has opened his eyes to the evils underlying the society he inhabits. And, whilst seeking truth, he finds a soulmate and lover in the most unexpected circumstances.

Witnessing his beautiful and clever daughter, Tumalind, wrongly chosen as a Virgin Gift, religious fanatic Aglydron follows the mission in order to right the wrong. Okkyntalah, Tumalind’s young and handsome betrothed, helps Aglydron kidnap the rightful Virgin Gift to take her over unknown seas and lands, risking violent death at the end of their epic journey.

Here are some review quotes, to heighten your interest and inform you of other readers’ impressions:

‘It is hard to imagine anyone getting to the end of this and not thirsting for more. The opening scene is gripping. It hooked me in and then I was compelled to read the rest.’ Dr P. Grubb

‘Stuart Aken does a tremendous job of world-building, and the beliefs and mythologies of the world are well integrated into his characters who speak and act with references to their existing mythology.’ Walter Rhein

‘The beautiful prose, delectable style of writing and the sharpness of the story is enough to keep one absorbed to the last page.’ Khamneithang Vaiphei (one of Amazon’s top reviewers)

‘The author has created a well-realised world with differing societies, full of many small details that serve to highlight cultural mores, and of course a host of interesting characters.’ N. Lilley

‘I've rarely read an epic novel of such power and I write as a PhD in creative writing!’  Nigel J. Robinson

And, of course, you need to know where to buy the book. Simply click on the supplier’s name and you’ll be whizzed over the ether to the appropriate place. Enjoy the read.

Today’s the Day!

The launch party is off the ground, or will be, from 12:00 noon (BST).  You can join in the fun and excitement of the launch of my epic fantasy trilogy. Book 1, Joinings, (A Seared Sky), is published today in print and ebook formats. More than a book, it’s a work of love and craft in preparation for years and brought to you by the added skills of a brilliant publisher, Fantastic Books Publishing.

This unique novel will delight all adult readers (because of the themes addressed, I advise a reader age of 15 and above).

The launch is an online event so everyone can attend and join in the fun. There’ll be giveaways, signed print editions, interaction with the author, interviews, videos and more. It’s easy to get involved; click this link and you’ll be whisked to where everything’s happening. I’ll be at the party for as long as I’m able. Come along, ask questions, join the gang here, interact.

For those unable to make it, here are the links to buy the book:
